Asplenium nidus

Bird's-nest fern, shot in Chiang Mai, Thailand by Jim Newberry.

This of course is an Asplenium nidus  (or for you philistines, a “Bird’s-eye fern”), which I found on a walk in beautiful Chiang Mai, Thailand.

OK, I had no idea what kind of plant this was, but thanks to Facebook I had it identified in no time. So in addition to being a time-sucking, soul-crushing, privacy-invading, seemingly unavoidable stain on humanity, the social media site can actually, occasionally, be useful. Tip of the “like” thumb to David Broadfoot.

Gutter of Stars

Motorbike reflected in puddle, looks like it's in the sky with stars. Photo by Jim Newberry.

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars,” Lord Darlington famously said in Oscar Wilde’s play Lady Windermere’s Fan (and of course more recently quoted by Chrissie Hynde in the Pretenders’ track Message of Love). This photo is un-retouched, other than overall contrast/brightness adjustments. Shot near Chiang Mai Gate, February 24th, 2014.
