Geri’s Palm Tavern

Gerri Oliver in front of Palm Tavern in Chicago. Photo by Jim Newberry.

I shot this portrait of Gerri Oliver for the Reader, in 2000. The Palm Tavern was a Bronzeville club where legendary musicians came to perform or hang out after a nearby gig; artists including James Brown, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, and The Temptations. Sadly, the Palm closed about 6 months after this photo was taken.

I’ll be showing a portfolio of street photography (as well as other work) tomorrow, Saturday June 9th, from 1:30-4:30 (followed by a reception) at a portfolio walk at the Hairpin Arts Center in Logan Square. Come on out and say hi if you get a chance.
